Marchand&Meffre. A beautiful Detroit
As everybody can see by the report of Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre, the city ruins are not isolated details but are woven in the urban contest: they have become a natural component of the landscape. Detroit presents all archetypal buildings of a mummified american city.
We are talking about the decay of the ? Motor city? linked with the history of Chrysler: until 1960 Detroit was one of most important american city, an industrial metropolis with a two millions inhabitants. But nowadays only ruins in sight, it seems like after a bomb explosion leaving only remnants of great empire.
Their photographic novel, published in 2010 as a weekly photo essays for Time magazine, titled ? Detroit?s beautiful, horrible decline? is a look in pain and fleeting beauty of this city and its difficult history. This tragic fairytale can be linked with the italian case of Turin, both motor city, Fiat and Chrysler, united by a common destiny and a holding on story. Think for a minute at the italian motor city..what could happen"
